Bad Conduct: PK Yonge Student Arrested
GAINESVILLE - A PK Yonge student has been arrested and parents tell us its because a girl was molested at school.
Police have been on and off campus at PK Yonge for the past week because of what they are only calling "serious inappropriate behavior." Parents tell me that three eighth grade boys were expelled for the rape of a 7th grade girl, which occurred after school hours but on PK Yonge campus last Thursday (11/1/12).
Kathy Olmos a parent of 3 children attending PK Yonge says she was surprised when she heard about the incident. "All of my children feel very safe here, and it was very shocking," she says.
PK Yonge families received an automated message through calls and voicemails alerting them of an incident regarding inappropriate behavior on campus.Olmos says she feels less concerned after the call she received at home.
The recorded call told parents, “I am calling because you may have seen or heard from your child that we have had police officers on our campus this week. Serious and inappropriate behavior between students is under investigation by the University of Florida Police Department. We are taking appropriate steps regarding students involved we are working with UPD to better understand what happened."
Janine Sikes, spokesperson for the University of Florida says the situation is being analyzed. "University of Florida Police Department was called in and certainly is investigating. We've taken appropriate measures here at PK Yonge," Sikes says.
Since everyone involved in the incident is a minor, no information on the matter is being released to us. "I am sorry but we're unable to talk about anything related to the incident because of the age of the individuals," Sikes says.
Olmos says despite what happened at PK Yonge, she has always made it a point to discuss things openly with her three children. "Our family has open conversations about what goes on in the world and how to be safe and how to take care of themselves. Kind of how to think ahead of situations."
One suspect has been arrested and charged with two things, lewd or lascivious offenses committed upon a person less than 16 years old and the kidnapping of a child under the age of 13 with aggravating circumstances. The case will continue to be investigated by the University of Florida's Police Department, who tell me this suspect may be charged with more.
