Black Friday Madness In Gainesville

Published November 22nd, 2012

GAINESVILLE - The country's biggest shopping day, Black Friday starts tonight at midnight but for some it started days ago. People in Gainesville have been camping outside of their favorite stores for days. It looked a little like tent city out in Best Buy today.

To those who don't participate, Black Friday may seem like chaos and madness but for shopaholics and bargain-hunters out there, this is a day they look forward to. Some people like Laura Butler don't support the idea of Black Friday for various reasons. "I don't shop for Black Friday just because… Especially when they make people come in on thanksgiving day, I just really think you should be home with your family."

For others it's something they've been waiting for all year. TJ Shelton & Jerel Hercules have been planning how to tackle Black Friday with a group of friends for a week in a half now. "Cause last year we came out and we saw everybody else with their tent so this year it's like we're going to come out prepared. Extension cords, surge protectors," they tell me.

The first tents out here in line at best buy have been here since early in the afternoon yesterday. They aren't here now but others in line tell me they slept here last night and come and go at different times.

These newlyweds are spending their thanksgiving in line hoping for some cheap electronics. Amber Frazier says, "We're going to get the Toshiba or actually the HP laptop and there are some video games we're gonna get too." They don't mind missing out on thanksgiving because their family isn't in town for the holidays anyways.

The couple also tells me, things in stores aren't as crazy as people may think. Joshua Garcia says, "Around ten o'clock they'll actually have police out here to make sure everything is safe in the line and people aren't cutting or whatnot. And they only let about 100 people in at a time."

Most of the people I talked to out there will have been in line for almost two days now. They don't seem to mind as they were well equipped with chargers and laptops to help pass time. Most of these people tell me, they hope to to do it all over again next year.
