Homeless Housing Makes Headway in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE- Neighbors in support of the facility off of 39th Avenue say the decision couldn’t have been made sooner while opponents worry about the safety of their family’s and property values.
But Alachua County Housing Authority Director, Gail Monahan has been waiting for a moment like this for five years.
Finally closing on a deal to build a transitional vet housing facility.
Monahan says, “Some of them have issues when they come out of the service and I suspect if you’d been as many horrific wars as them you would as well. But our history shows us that they recover and become great citizens."
Getting the funds to make the project a reality wasn’t easy but not as difficult as finding a place to build.
The VA hospital paid 1.9 million dollars in grant money for 65 percent of the costs leaving the housing authority to come up with the rest.
Vet America is scheduled to build the homes for the 112 veterans {38 units}.
