Weekend Planner
Happy Friday everyone! The winter period after the holidays is usually fairly quiet across north-central Florida...but we have a few suggestions for you if you're looking for something to do.
Winter sports really crank up on the UF campus. The Gator Gymnastics team starts its 2013 campaign tonight in the O'Connell Center. This is the 41st season for UF's gymnastics progam...a perennial powerhouse. The Gators bring their preseason #3 ranking to the O'dome to face Ball State in a dual meet. The action starts at 7 tonight on the UF campus. Website
The 11 and 4 Lady Gator basketball team is on the UF campus as well....facing off against LSU at the O'Connell Center this weekend. Tip-off is just after 2 pm Sunday. Website
If you're into flowers, Kanapaha Botanical Gardens might be the place for you this weekend. You might not think that winter and flowers go together...but camellias are frequently the first flowers to bloom in late winter. Kanapaha's Camellia Show is a two day event...designed to educate the public about care and growing of Camellias. The public show runs Saturday from 1 to 5 pm and Sunday from 9 to 4. Kanapaha Botanical Gardens is located about a mile west of I-75 just off Archer Road at 4700 S.W. 58th Drive in Gainesville. Website
South of Ocala on highway 441, the community of The Villages will be a busy place this weekend. The Villages Renaissance Faire runs Saturday and Sunday. King Henry and Queen Anne Bolelyn will oversee the festivities... including jousting, sword fighting... plus other entertainers taking you back in time a few centuries ago. The Renaissance Faire is a family friendly event and goes from 9 to 5 both days this weekend at the Villages Polo Fields. Website
At Spanish Springs Town Square, just off highway 441, the annual Villages Craft Festival will be underway. It runs from 10 to 5 Saturday and Sunday featuring art and crafts of all kinds. Website
