Weekend Planner
Happy Friday everyone! It's a good weekend if you'd like to step back in time....
Our first event takes us back to the middle ages to be exact! The Hoggetowne Medieval Faire is one of North-Central Florida's main events during the year. At the faire actors, musicians and street performers provide a festive atmosphere. You can cheer for your favorite knights as they joust in full armor, view a living chess match, or watch artisans as they practice their crafts. There's plenty of food, too. The Hoggetown Medieval Faire is at the Alachua County Fairgrounds, 2900 NE 39th Avenue near the Gainesville airport. It runs from 10 to 6 Saturday and Sunday for the next two weekends. Website
Yesterday's Festival in Keystone Heights will give you a chance to experience Florida history. You can learn the old-fashioned way of making cane syrup, watch Civil War re-enactors...and check out some cool antiques. And there'll be a variety of foods...including home made ice cream. Yesterday's Festival is this Saturday from 9 to 5 at the Gold Head Branch State Park, 6 miles north of Keystone Heights on State Road 21. Website
The Florida Museum of Natural History is having the public opening of its newest exhibit "Titanoboa: Monster Snake". Museum scientists recently discovered the ancient remains of what was the largest snake in the world...measuring some 48 feet long and weighing over a ton. The exhibit tells the story of the huge creature. You can learn about "Titanoboa" Saturday from 10 to 3 at the museum on Hull Road in Gainesville. Website
In Alachua County this weekend you'll can honor those who have served our country and thank those who help veterans all year long. The Veterans Award Banquet is taking place in Gainesville. Saturday at 6 there will be a reception, followed at 7 by a sit down dinner and presentation of awards. And you'll get a chance to see our own debonair Dave Snyder as he helps to emcee the event. Tickets are 30 dollars. It's at the Paramount Plaza Hotel on SW 13th Street in Gainesville.
Finally, the Gator gymnasts are in action tonight in the O'Connell Center. They take on Auburn at 7. Website
