GAINESVILLE - They tried to paint the town orange in order to draw attention to those who are black and blue-- both physically and emotionally. The Spot It, Stop It... Bullying Hurts Everyone campaign came to an end today. Alex Curbelo a team member for "Spot It, Stop It... Bullying Hurts Everyone" campaign says this doesn't mean preventing bullying in Gainesville should stop. "What we wanted was to show them that they can take this initiative and implement it themselves and make it their own. So they can end bullying even though our campaign has to stop," Curbelo says.
University of Florida students created the campaign as part of a competition in the field of Public Relations. The event was filled with music, vendors and raffle prizes. The River Phoenix Center For Peacebuilding among other organizations helped lead the campaign. Dorothy Maver the executive director for the River Phoenix Center For Peacebuilding. "78% of the suicides right now of our youth are bully related. Bullycide has become a term that we all know. We've become familiar with it... Unacceptable," Maver says. Mayor Craig lowe declared February 2013 the "Spot It, Stop It... Bullying Hurts Everyone" month.
