Shots Fired Near Marion County School
MARION COUNTY, FL:
Gunfire was reported in a neighborhood next to two schools on February 12th. A man from Ocala is behind bars after firing a weapon.
The grandparent, Abdur Khans, of some children who attend the private school called Shiloh, said "That's really a terrible thing,".
To hear that a man fired rounds from a gun about 800 feet from where Abdur Khans' grandchildren go to school.
Khans said, "I am really concerned about our kids of course," Abdur Khans (grandma) said.
On Tuesday, 19-year-old Corey Dixon allegedly fired shots near the 1900 block of SW 2ND ST.
Not far from two schools--Dr. N. H Jones and a private school called Shiloh.
"We had a witness that was present in the area who was luckily keeping the suspects in sight," Sergeant Angy Scroble said.
Sergeant Angy Scroble with the Ocala Police Department says the witness saw Dixon fire the gun, hide it in the woods and then run into this barber shop.
That's where officers found Dixon and the man who was with him-- Alphonso Edwards.
The witness identified Dixon as the one who fired the shots.
Sergeant Scroble said, "I don't know if they were randomly firing for the fun of it or for the sake of it, and although there doesn't seem to be an explanation at this point except that the possession of the handgun was there, there were shots fired and it was within that 1000 feet of a school, putting innocents in danger," Sergeant Angy Scroble said.
Officers arrested Dixon and found the handgun, but not the shell casings. Edwards was not arrested. Sergeant Scroble says it's always a major concern when officers are called out to a scene where shots are being fired near a school.
Sergent Scroble explains, "We have always wanted our children to be safe in school, but lately different events that have come to light make use much more diligent in being in that area."
While some parents are on edge about the incident, others say they don't worry to much.
Another parent picking up their child said, "Some of this stuff is not in our control, and it can happen anywhere, whether it's this neighborhood or another neighborhood."
But officers say not near hundreds of school children.
Dixon faces multiple charges, including threatening a witness, firing within a thousand feet of a school, aggravated assault without intent to kill, tampering with evidence, and discharging a firearm on a roadway.
He is in jail on more than 13-thousand dollars bond.
