Happy Friday everyone! This time of year you may be thinking about ways to cool off....
One way is with a cold slice of watermelon. And talk about good timing... The Newberry Watermelon Festival is Saturday. It's been an area favorite since 1946. The celebration of the fruit starts at 9 Saturday morning with a parade in downtown Newberry. There will be craft and food exhibits, and free watermelon slices throughout the day. Activities for the kids as well. Starting at 11:30 you can try your hand at hog calling, watermelon eating and seed spitting contests. The Newberry Watermelon Festival will be held at the future site of Destiny Community Church just east of Newberry on State Road 26. Website
Another good outing for the family is the Sweet Dreams Touch A Truck event. Now in its fourth year, Touch A Truck gives you the chance to check out or even climb on those cool looking vehicles you see around town. There'll also be hot air balloon rides, bounce houses and other activities. Not to mention the ice cream fire truck! The event benefits Camp Amigo, a children's burn camp.... and the Food4Kids backpack program. Touch A Truck is Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm at Citizens Field just off Waldo Road and 8th Avenue in Gainesville. Website
The Hippodrome in Gainesville is having a party this weekend. The theatre is celebrating it's 40th birthday. The event will be a chance for people in the community to celebrate what is referred to by some as "one of the country's leading professional regional theatres". At the event there'll be food, drink and live music, in addition to live performances by the cast of the upcoming show "Avenue Q". The Hipp is hosting the birthday celebration from 7 to 11 Saturday evening. Website
In Putnam County, blueberries are the main attraction at the Bostwick Blueberry Festival Saturday. Live music, arts and crafts and food are all part of the fun (including the blueberry pancake breakfast starting at 8 am). The event goes from 8 am to 4 pm at the Bostwick Community Center. Bostwick, by the way, is located about 7 miles north of Palatka on US Highway 17. Website
Finally, for country music fans, if you don't mind a drive, Alan Jackson will be in concert Saturday night. Showtime is 8 pm at Wild Adventures Theme Park, just up I-75 in Valdosta. Website
