Happy Friday everyone! Sunscreen and a way to beat the heat.... both things important this time of year.
How about a cool slice of watermelon? This weekend the Chiefland Watermelon Festival is the place to be to enjoy the cool, tasty fruit. The event has grown quite a bit since its start in 1954... thanks to the Chiefland Women's Club. There'll be lots of fun with watermelon eating and seed spitting contests, in addition to free watermelon stations. You may also want to check out the parade at 11 am. The festival runs from 8 am to 4 pm Saturday near the Chiefland Train Depot in downtown Chiefland. Website
To the north, the City of Jasper in Hamilton County is celebrating the blackberry this weekend. The Wild Blackberry Festival starts off on a good note with a blackberry pancake breakfast starting at 7 Saturday morning. The event itself will feature carriage rides, kids activities and arts and crafts.... in addition to an antique car show. Look for the food, especially the blackberry jams, jellies and cobbler. The Wild Blackberry Festival goes from 8 am until 2 Saturday afternoon in downtown Jasper. Website
Indoors, the Gainesville Community Playhouse is a good place to cool down this weekend. The theatre is featuring its latest play "Moonlight and Magnolias". The story is set back in 1939 on the MGM studio lot. The comedy revolves around the lives of producer David Selznick (and others) who were locked in Selznick's office trying to work on the screenplay for "Gone With the Wind". Showtimes are tonight and Saturday night at 8, with the show wrapping up with a matinee Sunday at 2 pm. Website
If it's music you want, you may want to head north Saturday. Wild Adventures is hosting the Charlie Daniels Band. Daniels is known for his country and southern rock roots. He's best known for his hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". The concert starts Saturday at 8 pm at the theme park in Valdosta. Website
