Happy Friday everyone! Music is prominent on our list of activities this weekend.
You can help raise money for a good cause... and enjoy some good tunes at the same time this weekend. The Drifters are appearing in Gainesville Saturday. The group has had many incarnations over the years... with a number of vocalists performing as part of the group since its start in 1953. "Under the Boardwalk" and "Up on the Roof" were just two of the groups hits over the years. The Drifters will be at the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall Theater Saturday at 7:30 pm. All proceeds go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Florida. Website
Just up I-75, Pat Benatar is appearing at Wild Adventures Theme Park Saturday. The singer-songwriter was huge in the 80's, with hits like "Love is a Battlefield", "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" and "We Belong". The four-time Grammy winner has had several platinum selling albums in her 40+ year career. She will be performing with her long time lead guitarist Neil Giraldo. Showtime is 8 pm Saturday at Wild Adventures in Valdosta. Website
Indoors in Gainesville you can catch The Hippodrome's latest production. "Avenue Q" is the part of the 40th anniversary season at the Hipp. The musical revolves around a recent college grad, his friends, and their life struggles in New York City. "Avenue Q" was a huge hit on Broadway, winner of the Tony Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. Shows are tonight at 8, Saturday at 5 and 8:30 pm, and Sunday at 2 and 7 pm. "Avenue Q" is not suitable for all audiences. Give The Hipp a call for more info. Website
Gainesville area amateur radio operators (or hams, as they are called) will be participating in their annual "Field Day" this weekend. When power is out, hams are sometimes the only people able to carry out emergency communications. This event not only gives them a chance to test their radio equipment and operating skills...but also show the public what ham radio is all about. If you have a weather radio, and you're having problems with it, they can help you out, as well. The event is Saturday and Sunday in the field at 4011 NW 34th Street in Gainesville. Website
Enjoy your weekend!
