Happy Friday everyone! We have a mix of outdoor and indoor activities whether its sunny or rainy where you are this weekend.
Most Independence Day celebrations are done... but a few communities are getting their festivities underway as we head into the weekend. Over on the Gulf coast, Horseshoe Beach is having its celebration tonight with about an hour of fireworks at dark. Meanwhile, the Town of Suwannee toasts the birth of the U.S. Saturday. There'll be food vendors, crafts and a golf cart parade at 4 pm...with fireworks at dark. Website
Farther down the coast in Levy County, the Cedar Key Light Station is having an open house. Access to Seahorse Key is normally restricted after March first to protect the breeding and nesting of 15 species of young birds. Not only will the light station be open, but UF will have touch tanks with marine life on display for visitors. And you can use spotting scope to take a closer look at nesting pelicans. You can take your own boat, or catch a tour boat at the dock in Cedar Key to get there. The open house runs from 10 to 4 Saturday. Website
The City of Gainesville's Free Friday's Concert Series continues tonight. This years American songfest will have a slightly different focus. The event usually celebrates American music. This year the theme is a spoof of a popular NPR radio show. Tonight's show, the "All American Payne's Prairie Home Companion" will feature lots of music, comedy, and "News from Lake Wauberg", a parody of the "News from Lake Woebegone" sketch from the NPR show "A Prairie Home Companion". The event goes from 8 to 10 tonight at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza. Website
If you're looking to catch a play at a local theatre, we have a few suggestions for you. The run for the play "Avenue Q" was to have ended a few weeks ago...but it's stay at the Hippodrome has been extended until July 21st. It's not recommended for kids, by the way. Website Meanwhile, "Nunsense" finishes its run at the High Springs Community Theatre this weekend. Website
