Free Backpacks For Back to School
Closer to home, one local business has been making back to school easier for parents.
TV20 went out to Ocala this morning to see how a backpack can make a difference.
"Oh my goodness, i got here at seven o'clock this morning," said Cassidy Martin, a parent that waited in line.
Cassidy Martin waited an hour and a half before she was able to get her kids backpack's with the essentials they need for school.
She was one of hundreds of parents that got up early to bring her kids get their school supplies.
"I had four cranky children… they got up at five o'clock in the morning cause they wanted these backpacks," said Martin.
As a single mom to four, Martin knows that back to school… can be tough financially.
"I had to come here to get a little extra help, and I'm very grateful for it," Martin added.
She's one of the many parents that drove to nickel tile in Ocala for their fifth annual "Free Backpack Drive."
"There's paper, there's crayons, there's pencils, there's rulers… there's a little bit of everything just to get them started," said Martin about the backpacks.
… And with this kind of help from the community… Martin says she'll return next year.
"It makes me feel very good that there are good people out in this world," Martin said.
Laurie Nickel, co-owner of Nickel Tile says that being able to provide for those less fortunate, makes all the hard work worthwhile.
"When you see some families come through that really need it, it makes you feel better about it," said Nickel.
Nickel says with the help of other local companies that pitch in… around 25,000 dollars is raised every year.
… And this year, they are helping 2,000 children start with the tools they need.
With the first day of school only a few weeks away, hundreds of cars lined up agains 441 for the chance to get a free backpack.
One volunteer says it's especially important to help the kids in the community.
"I love to see it, it's like, you know, Santa Clause out there giving the kids backpacks. They love it, I love it, you know, I'll come again next year, every year until I'm old and gray I'll be out here handing the backpacks out," said volunteer April Morant.
As kids held their new bags… happy faces showed they were ready for their first day to start.
