Happy Friday everyone! Plenty of stuff going on this weekend with Gator sports taking center stage.
UF's soccer team is in action tonight at 7 as they take on rival Florida State at James Pressly Stadium. At 7:30, the Gator volleyball team faces off against Long Island University-Brooklyn in the O'Connell Center. On Saturday, the quiet at The Swamp finally comes to an end as the Gator football team gets back in action. The Toledo Rockets will be the opponent at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Kick off is at 12:21 pm. After the game, the volleyball team wraps up home activities for the Gators with a match versus Duke at 4 in the Odome. Website
Downtown Gainesville will be busy Friday nights before Gator home football games. The United Way of North Central Florida is putting on "United Downtown", a free street party. The event will feature a pep rally, live music, and a play zone for the kids. And Albert and Alberta will be there, too. "United Downtown" runs from 6-10 tonight on SE First Street in Gainesville. Fireworks are part of the festivities at some area events this Labor Day Weekend. The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak is having what it calls a "fireworks spectacular". The event goes from noon to 9 pm Saturday. There'll be food, bounce houses, live music and arts and crafts...with fireworks starting at dusk. If you've never been there, take I-75 exit 451 and go south four and a half miles. Website
In Palatka, it's seafood that will be center stage this weekend. Saturday, The Gem City Shrimp Blast comes to the downtown Palatka riverfront. There'll be lots of shrimp to be had, in addition to activities along the Saint Johns River, entertainment and things for the kids. The Shrimp Blast runs from 11 am to 11 pm Saturday in downtown Palatka. Fireworks start at 9 pm. Website
If you prefer to celebrate the holiday weekend Sunday, head to downtown Gainesville. Labor Daze Fest is in its third year. It's a free event featuring live local music, food, face painting and other activities for kids, and free services for families. And it's emceed by our own Corrie Lovette. Labor Daze Fest is from 4 to 10 pm Sunday at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza. Website
