Friends React To Deadly Crash On I-75 In Gainesville
LAKE CITY - Close friends are distraught by the news that a crash on Interstate 75 near mile marker 387 in Gainesville killed three and left two others in critical condition, Saturday night.
While the identities of some of the victims have not yet been released and the cause of the crash is still being investigated, while those who knew one of the drivers say this young man will be greatly missed.
21-year-old Hunter Bailey was driving his pickup truck northbound on I- 75 when troopers say he crossed over the median and crashed into a Nissan driving southbound, that car was carrying four passengers. "He was like a brother to me," said Brandon Register, one of Hunter's close friends.
Hunter did not survive the crash. Two of the passengers in the Nissan died and the other two are in critical condition. Because all 4 passengers in the Nissan were from China, Florida Highway Patrol Troopers are still working to identify them. Meanwhile, friends of Hunter are still processing the news.
Alyse Raulerson another of Hunter’s friends said, "Nobody, nobody hated him in Lake City... I mean everybody loved him, everybody. He was just awesome like that."
His friends put together a memorial ride to reminisce the good times they all had with Hunter. "Hunter would love to ride. I mean when he would come to town we would ask him to go riding and we would all end up in the forest," Register said.
Saturday night's weather may have played a role in the accident. "From what we understand he hydroplaned... A couple of us here know what it is to hydroplane a vehicle, there's no controlling it. I guess there was a car in the wrong spot at the wrong time," Register added.
Hunter's friends say he was a funny, loving 21-year-old who was into trucks and riding; they still can't believe he's gone. Register said, "I can't imagine what it's like losing a family member, but he's like family to me and it sucks. I just want everybody to pray for his family they need it."
The Florida Highway Patrol is working with the Chinese Consulate to identify all the passengers. The reason for the crash is not known yet, however FHP is continuing to investigate the case.
