Nearly 30 Cars Damaged by BB Gun Vandals
MARION COUNTY- A two night spree left more than two dozen North Central Florida residents with damaged cars. Deputies said about 30 vehicle windows were shot at with a BB gun.
"There was just glass all over the place," said Vinny Velleco.
On Saturday morning 18- year -old Vinny Velleco of Silver Springs Shores discovered someone vandalized his mother's 2010 Rav 4 Toyota.
"This right here the rear window was shot out, with a big hole and stuff. It was shot with a C02 BB gun. I actually have one myself so I realized it," said Velleco.
The Velleco's aren't the only ones with damaged cars.
"I thought someone had a problem with us, but then we noticed the neighbor had it and another neighbor on that street down there," said Velleco.
Marion County deputies said between 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday, nearly 30 vehicles were shot at with a BB gun. In most cases, the vandals aimed at rear windows, shattering dozens. Elizabeth Lange of Silver Springs Shores showed me her mother's minivan, which is now covered with a tarp. Lange said this busted window is hurting her family's everyday routine.
"She has to worry about trying to fix her good vehicle and paying for a rental because obviously we can't see out the back window so it's a hazard to us," said Lange.
The vandals seem to be targeting the southeast part of Marion County. There were over 20 damaged cars in the Silver Springs Shores area, two in Belleview and five in Ocklawha.
"We are going to continue to look at the evidence that is at each scene and see if we can put a direct connection. But at this moment certainly is not a day to day occurrence. This is unusual," said Judge Cochran who is the Public Information Officer with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
"It was probably some kids around the area that thought it was fun to goof off," said Lange.
But this is anything but fun, for those with busted out car windows. Because now they're stuck paying the price.
"I don't feel good at all. I have been looking around for the part for this truck here, but I can't find it in Ocala," said Silver Springs Shores resident Frank Brown.
The damage to the car windows will cost victims anywhere between $300 to $600. While driving around Silver Springs Shores I noticed most people are currently using plastic to protect the inside of their cars. So far no one has been arrested in connection with the crime spree.
