Happy Friday everyone! Plenty of fun things to do outside this weekend!
A long time tradition continues this weekend in Newberry. It's time for the Newberry Watermelon Festival. The event started in 1946. This year, the festival gets started with a parade downtown Saturday morning at 9. There'll be food, arts and crafts, and businesses showing off their wares all day. Also available all day.... free watermelon slices! Add in the watermelon eating, seed spitting and hog calling contests and you've got a great event for the family. The Newberry Watermelon Festival runs from 9 to 5 Saturday at the future site of Destiny Community Church (Newberry Road just west of SW 202nd Street). Website
If you'd like to take a gander at some cool vehicles Saturday, check out the Sweet Dreams Touch-A-Truck event in Gainesville. This is the fifth year for the event where you get to touch, climb on or climb into those vehicles you see everyday. A fire engine, dump truck, ambulance, cement mixer... you name it, they've got it. A hot air balloon and helicopter, too. There'll be food and other fun activities to enjoy. Touch-A-Truck goes from 9 to 2 Saturday at the Northeast Complex next to Citizen's Field in Gainesville. It benefits Camp Amigo, a children’s burn camp. Website
Also outdoors this weekend, the American Heroes Air Show. It's referred to as the "nation's premier free helicopter-only community event". The idea behind the show is give you an up close look at helicopters and learn about the role they play locally and nationally. There'll be a variety of helicopters there, including some from law enforcement and the military. And you can talk to the crews and speak with recruiters about their mission. It runs from 9 am to 4 pm Saturday at Santa Fe College's Northwest Gainesville campus. Website
Indoors, the Ocala Civic Theatre is wrapping up its season with the show "Camelot". The musical tells the familiar story of the reign of King Arthur and his beautiful Queen Guenevere. The original production won four Tony Awards. Shows are tonight and Saturday night at 8 pm with a matinee Sunday at 2 pm. "Camelot" runs through June 8th. Website
Enjoy your weekend!
