The Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals is THE big event across our area this weekend. It's the traditional east coast opener for the National Hot Road Association drag racing season. When you go, it helps to have some earplugs as the top fuel dragsters, funny cars and others tear down the track. The jet dragsters and motorcycles are pretty cool, too. And you can get down in the pit to check out the teams as they work. Gatornationals runs through Sunday at the Gainesville Raceway. Website
There certainly are quieter events over the next few days. Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville is hosting its Spring Garden Festival this weekend. Expect around 175 booths at the event featuring plants, garden accessories, arts and crafts and food. It's 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday - Website. Meanwhile, the Florida Museum of Natural History has its Can You Dig It event Saturday. It's a great event if you're into geology, gems, minerals, fossils and a lot more. And you can see a volcano erupt while you're there. It's from 10 to 3 Saturday - Website.
Over near the Gulf coast, Homosassa is hosting Shrimpapalooza again this year. It's referred to as 'Mardi Gras - Homosassa Style'. There's a parade at 10 am tomorrow morning, in addition to lots of food and live entertainment. It runs from 9 am to 6 pm Saturday - Website. To the north in White Springs, this is the weekend for the Wild Azalea Festival. There you'll find a street dance until 9 tonight. Saturday's activities include a pancake breakfast at 8 am, in addition to a wild azalea sale, arts and crafts and plenty of food. The festivities are at the Tourism Center in town - Website.
For music lovers, country artist Sammy Kershaw is appearing at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weirsdale for two shows Saturday, at 2:30 and 7:30 pm - Website. At the Opry Sunday, its rock and roll legend Chubby Checker. He'll be doing the Twist, and other songs, at 2:30 and 7:30 Sunday - Website.
The Columbia County Fairgrounds is the place for the Florida Gateway Pro Rodeo tonight, Saturday and Sunday - Website. Meanwhile, the Suwannee County Fair in Live Oak - Website, and the Putnam County Fair in East Palatka - Website- both get underway tonight.... continuing through next Saturday.
