In Gainesville, this is the weekend for the 5th Avenue Arts Festival. The event, which began in 1979, celebrates not only Gainesville's African American community.... but the environment, as well. Expect a weekend of performance and visual art. Local organizations and businesses will be there, too. Lil Jake and the Soul Searchers will be performing... while the Children's Corner will be set up with fun activities for the kids. The festival runs from 11 am to 7 pm Saturday and noon to 5 Sunday in the area near Northwest 5th Avenue and Sixth Street. Website
It'll be a busy weekend in High Springs as the city is host to the Pioneer Days Festival. The popular event, in its 41st year, celebrates the community's history dating to the 1800's. It features a variety of fun things for the family. There'll be costume and pie baking contests, a Kids Korral along with food and arts & crafts. The historic shoot-out reenactments are there, as usual. Pioneer Days goes from 10 am to 5 pm Saturday and 10 to 4 Sunday. It's at James Paul Park and downtown High Springs. Website
Meanwhile, in Marion County, it's time for Dunnellon's Boomtown Days. IT is a celebration of the city's history as a phosphate mining town. The list of activities includes a car show, lots of food, a kids area and live entertainment. There'll also be shootouts courtesy of the old Six Gun Territory Gunslingers. The event runs from 10 am to 9 pm Saturday. It's in historic Dunnellon near West Pennsylvania and Cedar Street. Website
In Gainesville, you can get out and hear the crack of the bat this weekend on the UF campus. The Gator baseball team continues its series with South Carolina at McKethan Stadium. Games start tonight at 7 and Saturday at noon. Meanwhile, the top ranked ladies softball team is home as well. They have a three game series versus Ole Miss. Games are tonight at 6, Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at noon. Website
Also this weekend: You can be "Firefighter for a Day" with the folks from Alachua County Fire Rescue at Lofton High School Saturday from 10 to 2. Website
