Mizell Friday
Women wear clothes that
“EXPLODE with color”…
Their hats--“large and flamboyant”…
On the “first Saturday in May”---
the Kentucky Derby is “a SASSY package”…
More than 100,000 patrons will WAGER
$10-million…
On Derby Day---Race One goes off at
10:30 in the Louisville morning---
EIGHT HOURS before “the Derby” is run…
As the crowd grows---mint juleps are SWIGGED---
and "over-dressed people"
PRETEND to be
“adept at picking winners”…
All through the weekend,
“racing pros” and “great pretenders”
try to figure which “3-year-old”
is MOST LIKELY to become the
137th horse to “wear the Roses” …
Many bettors study
“The Daily Racing Form”..
But some wagers are based on
“liking the colors of the jockey’s SILKS”…
If you’re a Floridian---maybe a few bucks
will be placed on one of five colts BORN
in OUR neighborhood…
Maybe it’s a horse’s NAME
that grabs you---“Arch-arch-arch”,,,
“Mucho Macho Man”… OR--“Pants on Fire”---
Biggest story line is
Calvin Borel---hoping to ride his
fourth Derby winner in five
years---aboard 20-to-1 shot
Twice the Appeal...
The Derby is a “happening”…
When the University of Louisville band
plays “My Old Kentucky Home”---as
horses stroll from “paddock” to “track”---
it’s “okay to weep”…
Finally, when the STARTING GATE
opens---for “two minutes” there is
NOTHING like a Kentucky Derby…
I’m Hubert Mizell, and that’s what I think.
