Doctor Tecla Myrick from the Alachua County Animal Services talks about protecting your pets from ticks.
Ticks are ectoparasites that like to suck blood from their hosts.
They can be found year round in Florida.
There are many different species and they like grassy, wooded areas.
Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Anaplasma.
They can also cause a syndrome called tick paralysis.
If you see ticks on your pet, remove them immediately by grasping with tweezers or forceps and slowly pulling.
If you are not comfortable removing them yourself, take them to your veterinarian.
Also, ask your vet about prescription flea and tick prevention medicine.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, contact you vet.
