Police arrested 36-year-old Mario Williams and 24-year-old Murdolph Jones for two early morning robberies. Both robberies happened near Downtown Gainesville and took place only three minutes apart.
Police say Williams and Jones stole a cell phone in each incident. Investigators say the pair claim it was a joke and planned on posting a video of the stolen phones on YouTube.
Police arrested the two men when the first robbery victim called in with the car's license plate number.
"That allowed us to make a quick arrest," said Gainesville Police spokesperson Lt. Keith Kameg. "But unfortunately too many of our criminals want to prey on students because they think most of our students are multi-millionaires."
GPD has seen about 20 robbery cases in the last month. Most involved people heading back from downtown bars after closing, with cell phones and small amounts of cash being taken.
