More than 2,000 ballots were mailed out to registered voters, 718 were returned. Residents were asked whether they wanted to be annexed into the city of Gainesville. Ninety-three percent of voters rejected annexation by 669 votes, while 49 people were for it. Many of the residents were worried their property taxes would go up, but city commissioners feel a tax increase would not have been an issue.
