It's been a part of the Florida educational system for more than a decade, but the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test may soon be a thing of the past. Even though no final decision has been made school districts may already be saying goodbye to the FCAT.
Several North Central Florida school districts will be doing field testing for "end-of-course" exams that would replace the FCAT tests. The exams will cover Algebra I and Geometry with testing in May.
So far the only component that is clear in the plan is that the test would take place at the end of the course. Other aspects including how these exams would fit into the high school grading system remain unclear.
"There actually might be the potential for more coverage in that particular subject before a child is assessed on that material," said Karen Clarke, director of secondary curriculum and school improvement for Alachua County Public Schools.
Under the plan math would be taken off the FCAT exam next year. The other FCAT subjects would be removed over the next four years.
