As the City of Gainesville struggles to balance a budget in the middle of a recession, one department is cutting costs without cutting staff.
The Public Works Department is using new software to improve the way they repair roads within city limits.
The new program allows them to get a quick and accurate read of how badly a road is damaged and helps them avoid rebuilding the road entirely.
Rebuilding a road is ten times more expensive than repaving it.
Another way they're saving dollars is by replacing the lightbulbs in traffic lights to more energy efficient models.
In all, the department is saving hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
City Commissioners hope finalize the budget sometime in July.
