At farmers markets you can expect to find a variety of products, many from local sources. Yet when it comes time to paying for those items there's usually only one option: cash. That's not the case at one North Central Florida location.
In High Springs customers can get tokens to pay for transactions using food stamps or credit and debit cards. In 2007, the farmers market received a grant to purchase an electronic benefits transfer or EBT system that makes these purchases possible.
High Springs is one of only a handful of sites in Forida with the system. Since adding the system High Springs Farmers Market manager Tina Prizament said about $400 are spent using the special green and yellow tokens.
"It means people don't have to leave the site and the tokens can only be redeemed within the market," said Prizament. "So it's a win-win situation for all the people participating."
