Even if the oil well in the Gulf of Mexico was plugged today and no more oil leaked out there would still be a big mess to clean up for years. A local company in Gainesville called Evolugate is developing microbes that could help in cleaning things up naturally. These bacteria already exist and eat oil but these are hype specialists at consuming oil. They put the bacteria through environments similar to the Gulf. When this happens many of the microbes die but through natural selection the resilient ones live and these are grown. These microbes are then able to live and grow at conditions in the Gulf and eat the oil. The microbes being grown right now are for the open sea oil but they hope to develop other ones to deal with oil at other areas such beaches.
