Technology savvy students in Marion County no longer have to part with their beloved, hand held mobile devices during class.
According to a study called The Pew Internet and American Life Project, 71 percent of American Teens own cell phones. Marion County schools decided to embrace the technology.
However, the change in policy does not mean that students can use their phones to socialize during class. Rather, they are to be used exclusively as educational tools.
Marion County invested in wireless routers for some of their schools. Students can use the technology to keep track of assignments using virtual agendas. They no longer have to carry dictionaries or calculators, saving some parents money. Students can also use their personal phones to communicate with teachers, keep track of their grades, and work on group projects.
It is at the teacher's discretion when they may use their cell phones. Students can not have them out during lunch or between classes.
Students were not able to use their personal cell phones for social or educational purposes during the last school year in Marion County.
