Meyer Gets First Commitment for 2008!

Published April 19th, 2007
Living just down the road from the Florida Gators, Earl Okine has been to the campus several times. Yesterday's trip for the defensive end was certainly the best so far.

"Coach Urbar Meyer invited me and my parents into his office at 5:15 yesterday and he offered me," said Okine. "He was just saying 'I have good news', and my heart kind of stopped. He said he wanted me to be the first commitment this year because I am a hometown guy and I can be a great player for them. My parents were pretty shocked about it."

Having been around the coaches many times, Okine and his father actually felt going in that this trip was a little different from the others and they had to get a gameplan together.   "Before we went in to talk with Coach Meyer, I talked with my dad and he said that 'if they offer this is something you need to sleep on it'."
Through a tough night of sleep, Okine woke up and headed into school this morning.

"I discussed it with my head coach, my defensive coordinator, and my defensive line coach and they said "if you have no doubts, you might as well do it."   After a quick phone call to the Gator coaches, Okine officially filled into the first slot on the class of 2008 commitment list for Florida.   "It feels great."
Okine, who was a standout performer at the Scout.com Combine in Jacksonville, has a high ceiling with his 6-foot-7, 235-pound frame. At the combine, he posted an incredible 4.40 pro shuttle time and 7.20 three-cone drill. Those types of numbers brought in offers from schools like Arizona State, Mississippi, South Carolina, and recently Florida State.   Still, the offer from the Gators was the one he wanted all along.   "I love the Gators and I've always been a fan."
