Billy's "Young Guns" Shoot Down Hatters
It was a struggle early before a move by Billy Donovan would motivate his young team against Stetson. Four minutes into the game, Donovan benched four starters, leaving only freshman point guard JaiLucas on the floor. The change sparked the Gators to a 71-48victory over Stetson Tuesday night.
Donovan said the sluggish start reminded him of his early years coaching a young Gators team. "In their mind, I think that they think that I'm going to sprinkle stardust all over them and just win. It doesn't work like that," he said. "They've got to learn what goes into this whole process, and they have absolutely no clue what it's about."
Florida trailed 6-1 when Donovan made the change and 12-3 two minutes later, but the Gators finished the final 14 minutes of the half with a 32-9 run. UF made 13-of-20 shots and Stetson missed 14-of-17 shots.
Marreese Speights finished with a game-high 15 points and sixrebounds. Nick Calathes rebounded from his slow start to finishwith seven points, seven assists, six turnovers and three steals. All nine Florida players who took the court scored at least three points.
