Werner and Calathes Lead the Way
Dan Werner showed why he was one of the highly touted recruits in the country when Billy Donovan brought the New Jersey native to Gainesville 2 years ago by going for a team and career-high 20 points and 14 boards to lead Florida to a 52-49 victory in Jacksonville.
On a night when the Gators shot just 26 percent from the field, including hitting just 2 3 pointers (both by Werner) Dan the Man connected on 6 of his 15 shots to go with his career-high night (14) on the boards.
Two-Time Florida Mr. Basketball Nick Calathes struggled from the field, but made Billy Donovan proud, along with helping lead the team to victory by knocking down 9 out of his 9 free throw attempts (including 4 key ones with under :40 seconds to play).
Calathes also pulled down a career-high 15 boards to lead the team on the glass.
Florida trailed by 9 at the break and by as many as 11 points in the first half.
Local Super Star Freshman Willie Powers (P.K. Yonge) did all he could to help lead the Eagles scoring a team-high 17 points.
The Florida men improved to 10-1 on the season. The Gators reached 10 victories at the earliest date in school history. Â
UF returns home Wednesday for a 7:05pm game at the O'Dome before traveling to Columbus (Dec. 22) to take on Big Ten Ohio State in a rematch of last year's national championship. Â
