Speights Works Out for 76ers
With the NBA Draft taking place in less than a week, the Philadelphia 76ers decided to hold their fourth pre-draft workout on Thursday. Among the prospects that attended the workout included Florida forward/center Marreese Speights, Louisville forward/center David Padgett, California forward Ryan Anderson, South Florida forward/center Kentrell Gransberry and Grand Valley State forward/center Callistus Eziukwu.
Chairman Ed Snider, President and General Manager Ed Stefanski, Head Coach Maurice Cheeks and the rest of the coaching staff were among those in the gym watching the workout. DiLeo emphasized that it is extremely important to get these guys in and work with them on a more personal level.
DiLeo has stated that he wants the chosen player to fit in on two levels. He obviously has to adapt physically and athletically, but his personality also gets taken into account.
In just two collegiate seasons, Florida forward/center Marreese Speights has acquired almost every accolade a player could hope for. In his inaugural season as a Gator, Speights backed up two future NBA lottery picks (Al Horford and Joakim Noah) while also assisting the team to the National Championship.
Speights has learned a lot from both up and coming stars, especially Al Horford. "Every possession he goes hard and he developed that mid-range game," said Speights. "That's what you need in the NBA. Have a big man who can shoot like him. I learned a lot. If you play hard every possession, you'll be a good player."
Speights knows that he could potentially fall to the Sixers with the 16th pick, so playing for the young, exuberant team is something he looks forward to. "It would feel good because it's a young team and they run and I like to do that. I fit in good with a young team. I bring a lot of energy to the team."
The Florida big man has impressed numerous people, including DiLeo. "His length, his athleticism, he can score around the basket with both hands, he can step outside and shoot the jump shot," said DiLeo. "He's a work in progress but a talented player."
