Lochte was expected to contend with Michael Phelps for the gold medal in the 400 IM. Instead, Phelps may have set the tone for what could be a record-breaking year in Olympic swimming. Phelps set a new world record in the 400 IM final, swimming 4:03.84, for the first of what could be 8 gold medals. Lochte won the bronze medal, finishing in with a time of 4:08.09. Lochte still has a chance to medal in the 200 IM, 200 Backstoke and 4x200 relay.
