Spikes Earns Conference Honor
Gator junior linebacker Brandon Spikes has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The recognition follows the Gators 51-21 victory over defending national champion LSU at Florida field in front of a national television audience on Saturday night.
Spikes had a career-high two interceptions, including a 52-yard touchdown return in the fourth quarter for his first career score. With the interceptions, he became one of only six linebackers in the nation to have two picks in a game this season and the third Gator defender to return a pick for a touchdown this year.
Spikes anchored a defensive unit that held LSU to just 80 yards rushing after the Tigers entered the game ranked second in the SEC and 24th in the nation with 206.5 yards per game. The first-team All-SEC linebacker tallied five tackles in the win and currently leads the squad with 46 on the season.
