San Francisco has EXCEPTIONAL “points of pride”… Golden Gate
Bridge…Fisherman’s Wharf… Tony Bennett’s singing---“I left my heart”…
world’s greatest skyline, topped by Transamerica Pyramid… “SNAKE-y”--gorgeous
Lombard Street…Nob Hill… LITTLE CABLE CARS “that go halfway to the stars”…
Alcatraz,,, also, the football 49ers, winners of five
Super Bowls…and now, baseball’s World Series champion Giants---an ancient
franchise, long-ago transplanted from New York… It’s the first time the Giants
won baseball’s ultimate prize since 1954--“when the HERO was a kid named Willie
Mays”---Willie was a 23-season WONDER---he’s now 79--lives in San Francisco…
today’s Giants TOO have “a gifted newby”---Gerald “Buster” Posey III---
TWO YEARS AGO he played for the FSU Seminoles… Buster is the
second “rookie catcher” EVER to be a World Series “starter”---the first?--Yogi Berra in
1947… In the ’90s, San Francisco almost LOST its Giants to Tampa Bay---which had no
baseball at the time…San Francisco ownership was “ravenous” for a new ballpark…
then--as though from “a magician’s top hat”--the Giants plucked a fabulous “downtown”
facility---“on the bay”---10 minutes from the city’s great sites… the Giants are drawing
“huge crowds”---SOON a NEW World Series banner will be hung… Hey, Tony Bennett-
--about time to “add a new verse”… I’m Hubert Mizell, and that’s what I think.
