GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - There's a prime job opening in college
football. Urban Meyer is stepping down as football coach at Florida
after the Gators' appearance in the Outback Bowl.
Meyer says he's leaving one of the premier jobs in college
football to focus on his family. "I have not seen my two girls
play high school sports," Meyer says. "I can't get that time
back."
The 46-year-old Meyer led the Gators to two national titles but
began to show the strain of his high-profile job last season when
he briefly quit for health reasons before deciding to return. He
says "last year was a knee-jerk reaction. This year is completely
different."
Florida finished 7-5, the worst record of Meyer's 10-year head
coaching career, which began at Bowling Green. It was the first
time the Gators had lost five regular-season games since 1988.
