Gator Baseball Gives Up Nine Runs, Falls to USC 9-2 in Game One
The last time the two teams met, a SEC regular season championship was on the line. The Florida Gators got the best of South Carolina then, but the Gamecocks showed the Gators tonight why South Carolina is the defending College World Series champs. The Gamecocks scored four runs in the top of the 3rd and 6th innings, and held No. 1 Florida off the scoreboard till the bottom of the 9th, taking Game One 9-2. Gator left-handed pitcher Brian Johnson went five and a third innings, allowing seven runs while striking out five batters. Gamecock junior Michael Roth took a shutout into the 9th inning for No. 4 South Carolina, but the Gators got two runs back to end scoring for the evening. Florida Catcher Mike Zunino extended an 11-game hitting streak, and the Gators hope to bounce back tomorrow night in Game Two.
