Questionable Call Costs Gator Baseball Series Against South Carolina
All Brian Johnson did was do what he'd done all his baseball life; make a clean baseball slide into a base. Unfortunately, the home plate umpire didn't see it the same way. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Gators tied with South Carolina 3-3, Josh Adams hit a chopper to third base where a force-out was applied at home plate. But umpire Jack Cox called Brian Johnson for interference, sliding into Gamecock catcher Brady Thomas, turning a one-out bases loaded situation into a double play with runners back to first and second. Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan came out to argue the call, but Cox would not change his mind. South Carolina pitcher John Taylor then struck out Zack Powers to end the inning, and the Gamecocks scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk by Tommy Toledo to Adrian Morales in the top of the eighth. The No. 1 Florida Gator team lost their first series of the season with Sunday's 4-3 loss, and fell into a tie with South Carolina with a 4-2 record in the SEC East.
