Costly Mistake Nearly Costs Gators a Trip to NCAA Gymnastics Championships
The No. 1 Florida gymnastics team had won six-straight NCAA regional meets, looking for their seventh in Denver, Colorado. Rhonda Faehn and the Gator gymnasts are probably leaving the Mile-High City feeling fortunate to just advance to NCAA Championships. Leading after three rotations, the University of Florida took a major stumble on the balance beam. Sophomore sensation Ashanee Dickerson fell off the beam and left out a skill in her routine. The penalty was a score of 8.475, leaving the Gators in a very vulnerable position. However, despite breaking their streak of regional wins, Florida took second place behind Arkansas, with a score of 196.425, besting Boise State by 25 hudredths of a second. Reigning SEC Freshman of the Year Alaina Johnson was steller, scoring a 39.525 for the All-Around title.
