Gator Baseball Takes Series From Vanderbilt in Extras, 6-3
When the Gators needed him the most, catcher Mike Zunino delivered once again for the Orange and Blue. For the second time in three games, the No. 5 Florida Gator baseball team rallied late against the No. 2 Vanderbilt Commodores en route to a 6-3 victory in 12 innings. The Gators trailed 3-1 when Zunino started his scoring, hitting a solo home run in the seventh inning. He followed in the eighth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3. And the biggest hit of them all came in extras with runners on first and second with one out. Zunino took a full-count pitch over the right field wall for a three-run shot that would end all scoring. Florida's impressive bullpen kept the Gators in the game after freshman Karsten Whitson gave up five hits and three runs in four and a third innings work. But the rest of Florida pitching combined on a three-hit shutout the rest of the way. Tommy Toledo picked up the win for the Gators, who are now 20-7, tied for first place in the SEC with Vanderbilt and South Carolina.
