GHS Stunned on the Road, Knights Pick Up Huge District Win 16-14
Gainesville High had a golden opportunity slip through their grasp as the Purple Hurricanes saw a 14-13 lead late against Vanguard turn into a 16-14 Knights victory. GHS failed to capture a district championship after throwing a late interception, and watched the Vanguard convert a key fourth down to kick a game-winning field goal. The Purple Hurricanes drove down the field in the waning moments, but a bomb to Chris Thompson at the one-yard line was ruled out of bounds, and GHS was flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty to knock them out of field goal range to preserve the Vanguard win. The Knights, like last week, were led by a stellar defense and special teams performance, including blocked punt returned for a touchdown by Najee Jamerson, giving the Knights a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. But Gainesville High quarterback Mark Cato connected with Thompson for a 58-yard touchdown to cut the lead 10-7. Thompson's 167 yards receiving outgained the entire Vanguard offense, limited to 157 total yards. With the victory, the Knights will most likely wrap up their first district title in ten years.
