Gator Baseball Throws Away 7-6 Game Against Ole Miss
In the rubber game versus Ole Miss, the Gators were up, down, and looked like the contest could end in a tie, but in the bottom of the ninth the Rebel Bears scored the final run in a 7-6 heartbreaking loss for Florida. The top-ranked team in the country gave up the last run on a Preston Tucker throwing error from first base. With the bags loaded and only one out for Ole Miss, Austin Maddox got a ground ball to first and Tucker went for the force play at home. But the ball was wide right of catcher Mike Zunino and was the final play of the game. The teams had agreed earlier the game would cease innings after a local 3:45 deadline, and had the Gators gotten out of the jam, the game would've ended in a tie. Earlier in the matchup, the Gators battled back from a 5-0 deficit and rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Florida started the comeback with home runs, first by Daniel Pigott, then by juniors Nolan Fontana and Tucker. The Gators dropped their first series of the season with the loss, and it's the third time in the past four years the Rebel Bears have knocked off the number one team in the country at Swayze Field.
