Heartbreak in Stonybrook, Gator Lacrosse Blows 7-Goal Lead, Fall to Syracuse in 2OT 14-13
In one of the most disappointing finishes in its otherwise remarkable three-year existence, the Gator lacrosse team fizzled late in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Semifinal against Syracuse and eventually fell to the Orage 14-13 in double overtime. Florida held a 12-5 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation, but Syracuse outscored the Orange and Blue 9-1 the rest of the way. Sarah Holden scored four of the Orange's final six goals, including the game-winner in sudden-death double overtime to shock No. 1 Florida into another heartbreaking loss. Syracuse upended the Gators earlier this year in similar fashion, handing Florida its lone home loss on March 3rd in a 12-11 double overtime victory. The Gators had a chance to put it away at the end of the first overtime, but a Gabi Wiegand goal was waived off when referees ran a stick check and ruled the pocket of her stick was too deep, voiding the potential game-winner. Brittany Dashiell had four goals on the evening, and Shannon Gilroy led the Gators with five. Syracuse outshot Florida 43-24, and Gator goalie Mikey Meagher added 15 saves. Florida finished their season 19-3.
