Two Local High Schools Advance to Softball State Championship Games
After battling opponents-and in one case the elements- two high school softball teams from North Central Florida have earned the right to play for a state championship on Tuesday. In Class 5A, Belleview staved off Ponte Vedra 6-4 in Clermont Monday afternoon, but the Rattlers did not have an opponent as of Tuesday morning because rain and lightning forced the postponement of the other semifinal game until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Meanwhile, in Class 1A, Lafayette beat Union County 14-4 to move on to the state championship game, but the score was close until the rain came. Lafayette led 5-4 before a delay in the fifth inning forced the girls off the field for a few hours. When play resumed, the Hornets score 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a commanding lead. The Hornets meet Jay Tuesday with a state championship on the line at 4 p.m.
