Gator Soccer Wins 2-0 Over Oklahoma State
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A goal in each half by junior Havana Solaun<http://www.gatorzone.com/guides/soccer/pages/season_info/player_bios/solaun_havana.php> gave the No. 10 Florida soccer team a 2-0 win over Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon at the James G. Pressly Stadium. It was the third double-goal match for Solaun during her Gator career.
Both of Solaun's goals came around 11 minutes of play for each half. Her first goal started from about 12 feet above the OSU box. Freshman Pamela Begić<http://www.gatorzone.com/guides/soccer/pages/season_info/player_bios/begic_pamela.php> sent a ball left to junior Annie Speese<http://www.gatorzone.com/guides/soccer/pages/season_info/player_bios/speese_annie.php> who was making a run down the left side of the box. Speese immediately centered the ball where Solaun uses her left foot to one-touch it in for her second goal of the season.
Speese also had the assist on Solaun's second goal. The ball dinged around between Speese, freshman Savannah Jordan<http://www.gatorzone.com/guides/soccer/pages/season_info/player_bios/Jordan_Savannah.php> and a pair of OSU defenders near the top of the box. Speese gained control of the ball in the traffic, took a couple of touches and then sent a short ball to Solaun. Her one-touch shot off her right foot scored from 18 yards.

Feel better about today verses Friday?
"What I like about the whole weekend was the two shutouts. I told our team afterward, when you're trying to win championships that's what's going to get us there."
"We could probably be more efficient in terms of our goal scoring, but to come out of this weekend with no goals allowed that's a good start for us." - UF coach Becky Burleigh
How is it now that Havana Solaun is scoring points?
"Well we held out Havana Friday night because she has a little bit of an injury. I was happy to see her get in there today and score two goals. She's a hard player to replace and for her to get in there today and score two goals - it was great to see her in action again." - UF coach Becky Burleigh
When Havana is healthy what does she bring to the table?
"She's a good playmaker. She poses a bad match up for most defenders because she's pretty fast and she's tall and she's really technical and she understands the game really well." - UF coach Becky Burleigh
Annie Speese is becoming a big playmaker. Just talk about what an asset she is at passing and assisting the ball on the field.
"Well that's what she does well. She's always been a really good passer of the ball. Today she probably should have had a hat trick of assists. She had a couple near misses, so I think that is just going to keep getting better and better as the chemistry continues to develop with our players." - UF coach Becky Burleigh
Talk about getting back out there after sitting out Friday and having a couple goals. It must have felt really good.
"It did. It was exciting to be back out there with the team working together and getting another win." - junior midfielder Havana Solaun
Talk about the run that you all are on right now with three wins, all shoutouts. How does that feel?
"It feels good. I think that, especially after a loss, you learn so much and I think that after FSU we kind of figured out what we need to improve on. We've been working really hard to get better at those mistakes." - junior midfielder Havana Solaun
Annie Speese, two assists, teeing it up for you. Talk about what an asset it is having a great passer like that in the midfield.
"Playing with Annie has always been so much fun because she just sees the pass, and she puts it on a silver platter for you. Both of her assists today were great." - junior midfielder Havana Solaun
Talk about your assists today and how your team is doing both offensively and defensively:
"I don't remember who played it out wide, but we did a good job getting out there. Then, Savannah (Jordan) made a great run near post, kind of drawing the defenders with her, and then I just saw Havana at the top of the box and I just played her and knew that she would get a good shot off. So she did a great job finishing that off first time.
Then the second one, I mean the ball was kind of bouncing around, I ended up with it somehow. Then, Havana again, I always know she'll be looking for the ball. So I just laid it off to her right foot and she again just put it away." - junior midfielder Annie Speese
On that second assist, how hard is it, when you have the box packed and you have so many feet fighting for the ball, for you to get control and then actually make the pass to Havana?
"Luckily she was pretty close to me, so it wasn't too bad, but there was definitely a lot of traffic in there. We did a good job keeping the ball alive. Not letting them clear it out, and Havana called for it and, luckily, I saw her and just kind of laid it back to her. It wasn't too hard of a pass to play because she was in a great position." - junior midfielder Annie Speese
With two assists today, how well are you seeing passing lanes develop right now?
"I think that's something that we still need to work on, is being more dynamic in the attacking third. We're still not getting too many runs beyond the ball and I think that's something we'll see more in practice, but we're starting to pick up a little bit of rhythm. Hopefully that will continue within the next couple of weeks." - junior midfielder Annie Speese
What is the defense doing in front of you to keep the ball out of the net?
"I think we're just staying really organized. We've been communicating really well, and like I said last time, we've been having a lot of new players in the back, so communication is key." - junior goalkeeper Taylor Burke
Speese now has four matches in her career with two or more assists - she had a three-assist match versus Florida Gulf Coast during 2011 regular-season action...today's result was the first loss for the Cowgirls and first they were shutout...Begić has turned in at least a point in each of the last three matches - scoring a goal at Florida International and versus Oklahoma and turning in an assist on Solun's first goal today...Solaun is a member of the U.S. Under-23 National Team player pool.
The Gators finish their three-match home stand Friday when undefeated Minnesota visits Pressly Stadium on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. Friday's match will be the Gophers' third consecutive versus Southeastern Conference opponents, as UM defeated LSU 2-1 last Friday and claimed a 2-1 OT win versus Mississippi on Sunday.
