Number of 'F' Schools Could Surge Under Changes

Number of 'F' Schools Could Surge Under Changes

Published February 27th, 2012

MIAMI (AP) - The number of Florida schools given an 'F' could increase dramatically under a proposal the Board of Education will consider Tuesday.

The proposed changes to the school grading calculation have been met with heavy opposition from superintendents, parents, and advocates for disabled students and English language learners.

Under the changes, schools where less than 25 percent of students score as proficient in reading on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test would automatically be given an 'F.'

Also, the proficiency of special education students and English language learners in their second year would be counted toward the school's grade, rather than just their learning gains.

The proposal comes in light of the waiver Florida received from the No Child Left Behind law and changes made to the FCAT.
