TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida Gov. Rick Scott is rejecting a bill that would have let two major universities raise tuition higher than what is currently allowed.

Scott on Friday vetoed the legislation that would have let the University of Florida and Florida State University increase tuition rates above the current 15 percent a year cap.

The governor earlier this week said he was undecided on the bill (HB 7129). But several times this year Scott has said he does not support raising tuition at this time. The governor did sign a budget, however, that allows Florida colleges to raise tuition five percent.

Supporters of the bill contended the extra tuition money will allow UF and FSU to compete nationally with other well-known public universities in North Carolina, Virginia and Michigan.
