OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - About 400 competitors throughout the nation were in Ocala to participate in a horse show.

The 40th Anniversary of the Horse Shows in the Sun also known as HITS Ocala began its holiday series on Wednesday, December 9 and it will last until Sunday, December 20.

Due to the pandemic, spectators were not allowed, barns were more spread out and exhibitor parties that were usually hosted by the show have been reduced.

“It’s very challenging,” said HITS Ocala Horse Show Manager Rian Beals. “It’s obviously new for everybody especially since the horse people are used to being outside and free. Rules are rules and everyone follows them very well. We’ve been pretty fortunate so far.”

The show is considering whether or not they will allow spectators next year.

“It would be more of a family feel,” Beals said. “Right now it’s unfortunately not. Hopefully as soon as we open back up again we’ll get a big crowd of spectators and hopefully we’ll be able to do that soon.”
