2nd Annual Florida Get Down Tournament kicks off new year
22 teams from across the sunshine state showcase skills
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The 2nd Annual Florida Get Down basketball tournament kicked off the new year in Gainesville, Friday afternoon.
22 teams in total - six from Alachua County, and as far as Tampa and Jacksonville - will participate in a three day tournament to showcase each team’s skills before in-school competition resumes.
The tournament is being held at St. Francis Catholic, but the host school didn’t find any fortune with home court, as they fell to Strawberry Crest High School 75-72.
Santa Fe, Eastside, and P.K. Yonge, also played today. Only Santa Fe and Eastside came away with victories.
The Tournament founder and director is Florida Gators basketball legend Dan Cross. Cross was apart of the programs first Final Four team, back in 1994. He played professionally overseas for sometime before coming back to Gainesville.
He said with the challenges 2020 posed for players getting exposure, notoriety, and competition it was important to give teams this opportunity.
