HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) - Hawthorne basketball and football player Jarrett Hughes strives for success on the field, court, and classroom. The senior has a 3.8 GPA and his favorite subject is French. Hughes says balancing it all is tough, but necessary

“Its very hard its gonna be hard either way whether yor going to school playing sports you gotta have good time management doing what you wanna do” Hughes said.

“As a multi-sport athlete he’s still able to maintain the GPA he has. That speaks volumes. He works hard on the field and classroom. He’s an example for our student athletes” Hawthorne head football coach Greg Bowie said.

Jarrett transferred from Keystone Heights his junior year and has made an impact ever since.

As a punter for the hornets Jarrett has an average punt distance of 29.3 yards with a long punt of 50 yards, he has also recorded 7 punts inside of the 20-yard line. He also plays wide receiver and has had eight receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown in his hornet career.

Hughes was a member of the Hawthorne football team that finished as runner ups this past fall. He’s also a guard for the Hawthorne boys basketball team. Last season Hughes helped his team win a state championship in basketball.

Jarrett says getting a ring with his teammates who are like brothers, was a great memory “Theres nothing comparable, it’s a one in a lifetime thing not many people get the opportunity to do. "

Team sports are a big part of his life, but so are individual ones. Like stock car racing which is something he’s done since he was little.

“I started at six years old and started racing go carts and worked from there my mom and dad met doing it” Jarrett is still deciding on where he wants to go to college, but he tells us one place that’s on his radar and its the same place where his brother, Josh, plays football.
