TV20 Meldon Law Scholar Athlete of the Week: Mason Gray (Columbia)
Senior shortstop swings for the fences and Ivy League
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Mason Gray isn’t afraid of failure or striking out.
Despite playing a sport that sees him fall short of his goal, time and time again, Gray never stops digging in and coming back for more.
To the Columbia High School senior, baseball is a game that has taught him a great deal about the sport and the bigger picture.
It’s a sport of failure,” said Gray. “It’s taught me many lessons over the years. Seeing yourself fail pushes you to be a better person. It shows that hey, sometimes even if you fail, you might be able to learn and be able to not make that same mistake again in life. Other sports you don’t always see that.”
Even though the Captain and shortstop of the Tigers Baseball team is only about 5′8, 150 lbs, he never backs down from a challenge.
“Being out there and seeing the competition levels, and saying hey, maybe you’re not the best all the time, but you have to compete with the best. Shows that sometimes the famous saying hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard.”
Working hard is exactly what defines Mason Gray. Not only does he have a tireless work ethic on the diamond, but also in the classroom.
He has a 4.6 weight G.P.A., something he cherishes, since academics have always been a high priority to him.
“Grades have been something that’s always been important to me ever since I was little, so going in to high school having that GPA I’ve always wanted to keep it up and it’s helped me get this far.”
But Gray isn’t satisfied with merely being known as a high school hero. He’s also hoping to attend an Ivy League university.
“When you hear the name Harvard, you don’t really relate that to anything else other than that’s the top school. “Freshman year, I actually went up to a Harvard camp and worked out for their baseball team, so I’ve been in contact with their coach over the years, and it’s been a dream.”
His unwavering focus and effort, for anything him attempts to do, is what gives his coach all the confidence in the world Gray will achieve his dream.
“He has an insane drive about him,” said Columbia High School Baseball Coach Brian Thomas. “I’m not sure I’ve been around as many 17, 18 years old that are as driven internally as he is. He just doesn’t want to fail. He wants to be a success at everything he does. If he goes to the gas station he wants to be the best guy pumping gas. If he’s on the baseball field he wants to be the best guy here. In the classroom, in the community.”
Gray will find out April 6 if he was accepted in to Harvard.
Mason Gray has demonstrated outstanding qualities on the diamond and in the classroom. And has earned the honor of being the TV20 Meldon Law Scholar Athlete of the Week.
